I recently received an email from a person asking me if there was possible a link between depression and high blood pressure. He was kind of joking.
Research does reflect a link between the two. Both ideas have been studied; hypertension leading to depression as well as depression leading to high blood pressure.
Depression as the Primary and Hypertenstion as the result: People suffering from chronic depression or other anxiety are up to three times more likely to also develop high blood pressure.
Also worth noting is that it is thought that people suffering from depression are more likely to engage in other contributors such as smoking, drinking and over eating. People suffering from depression are also less likely consistently treat hypertension.
But as strange as it may seem. Even people suffering depression that lived otherwise healthy live, also were more likely to suffer high blood pressure.
What’s the main cause of hypertension for people suffering depression is a change in hormones.
Another factor are medications taken for depression which can have high blood pressure as side effects.
We can therefore definitely conclude there is a link between high blood pressure and depression.
Now lets look at this from the other end. How high blood pressure causes depression.
The link here tends to lead back to the high blood pressure medication. The side effects clearly state on many medications: DEPRESSION.
This demonstrates how trying to solve one problem – in a wrong way – can cause endless problems in other areas.
And although the person who asked about depression was half joking, there is not doubt anxiety that goes along with knowing the hypertensive condition exists.
We know very well that stress is the cause of so many different conditions. It’s therefore no surprise that it also causes high blood pressure and depression.
Practices that can help high blood pressure regardless of the cause:
Don’t drink to excess. In fact, some people see a spike in blood pressure after just a drink or two, and in those cases drinking is not recommended at all.
If you smoke, quit as soon as possible. Hypertension among many other things that smoking causes.
Eat well. Choose fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible to help the body improve stamina and control weight.
I also recommend many of my natural health guides. To lower blood pressure, you should try my natural blood pressure exercise program and to control weight, you may want to check out my weight loss breeze program. It uses method unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.
