I am extremely fortunate in my position to be able to receive direct feedback from my clients.  They let me know personally, how my program has helped and ask follow up questions to help ensure they are as healthy as they can possibly be.  Sometimes, the same question comes up and its good to be able to address the answer to many.

Several of you have asked if there is a link between Vitamin D deficiency and hypertension (high blood pressure).

Vitamin D is actually several different vitamins ” Vitamin D2 and D3 specifically.  Vitamin D3 is produced when a persons skin is exposed to sunlight or ultraviolet light.  In fact, sunlight is the easiest way to get the required amount of Vitamin D.

Healthy bones rely on Vitamin D as do the body’s organs.  Vitamin D helps to keep the body functioning properly.

Research and studies show that a person is more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke if hypertension and a Vitamin D deficiency exist.

How can I tell if I might have a Vitamin D Deficiency?

Since symptoms of Vitamin D are often the same symptoms of other diseases (hypertension, flu-like symptoms, periodontal issues, depression, bone diseases), the best and easiest way to check to see if you are Vitamin D deficient is to have your doctor perform a blood test.

Age is a factor that can make one person more suseptible to a deficiency.  Older adults tend to spend more time indoors away from the ultraviolet light.  In addition, older skin does not convert the Vitamin as readily.

People who have limited exposure to ultraviolet light also have in increased chance of having the vitamin deficiency.  This would include people who live in areas that dont receive as much sunlight, women who cover their skin due to religious reasons or those who are employed in fields where they are constantly indoors and out of the sun.

People with darker skin are also at a greater risk for Vitamin D deficiency as darker skin does not produce Vitamin D as easily as lighter skin.

Obese people are also at a greater risk for Vitamin D deficiency.  Obese people have a lower plasma concentration and Vitamin D tends to accumulate in the fat cells.

The likeliest of treatments would be to receive 10 minutes of direct sunlight or ultraviolet exposure but make sure you talk to your doctor first in order to avoid sun-related health issues.

There are also many foods which naturally contain Vitamin D or are enhanced with Vitamin D including, many types of fish, milk, eggs, cereals and margarine.  Again, consult with your doctor or nutritionist first as one has to consume a large amount of these foods to get the intended results.

You might also consider supplements to help get an adequate amount of Vitamin D, but again a doctor’s advise is suggested to insure you don’t overdo it and suffer other problems.

Whether Vitamin D is partially to blame for your high blood pressure or other causes, I suggest you try the High Blood Pressure Program.  It has help thousands and will help you too.
