Sex and - Its Health Benefits

While many people don’t hear the word “sex” and immediately think, “great health,” it shouldn’t be dismissed.  People who are interested in sex and have a healthy sex life tend to have better immune systems and tend to live longer.

Why is this? There are several reasons.  One is that sex has been shown to reduce stress levels, thereby reducing the levels of cortisol and in effect, lowering blood pressure.  High blood pressure, over time, can lead to heart attack, stroke, blindness and kidney damage.

It is also proven that having sex at least twice a week increased the levels of immunoglobulin A, which helps to fight off colds and other viruses.  Avoiding illness means avoiding missed work and a potential trip to the doctor.

Sex also burns calories.  Almost 100 calories can be burned per half hour.  In addition to feeling better about one’s self and increasing self esteem, weight loss can lower blood pressure, and help control or prevent adult onset diabetes.

Another health benefit of sex is reducing pain.  Hormones like oxytocin and endorphins are released and lower pain levels.  Studies have shown that those suffering from headaches, migraines, arthritis and fibromyalgia reported fewer symptoms of pain when having sex at least twice per week.

Studies have also shown that regular sex decreases the risk of prostate cancer in elderly men.  Having at least 20 ejaculations per month showed the most benefits.
Some elderly people feel that they aren’t healthy enough for sex and that a stroke or heart attack could occur.

While it’s always a good idea to ask your doctor if you are healthy enough for sex, a study following almost 1000 men over the course of twenty years showed no increase in the chance of stroke compared to those who weren’t having sex.

In fact, the same men studied who had sex at least twice per week, reduced their chances of a heart attack by 50 percent.

It’s also important to recognize the value of a good night’s rest.  Studies have shown that those who reach orgasm sleep better.  Lack of sleep can lead to daytime confusion, irritability, weight gain (looking for energy in food that was lost due to lack of sleep), headache, and increased fibromyalgia pain symptoms.
