A Second Opinion Matters- and Maybe a Third and Fourth One As Well

Have you ever experienced a long-prevailing sickness? Have you ever met with a serious accident that impacted your life for good? People often have mixed initial reactions to such situations. Some seem to enjoy such scenarios as break from tiring jobs, while others find it extremely annoying to be bedridden. But at a specific point in time, people become desperate to get out of such a situation.

This desperation often results from the treatment talking too long to heal the problem. Most of the people are so loyal to their doctors that they obediently stick to what their doctors tell them. It is good to follow the advice if you find yourself on the road to recovery, but if you fail to witness any significant improvement, it can be a dreadful mistake to keep visiting the same doctor.

Sometimes it becomes important to take a second opinion. Not all doctors have the same expertise to find the solution to a problem. If you are visiting a doctor for the first time, you actually trust a person you have never met before. He or she is like a stranger, and the medical qualification doesn’t guarantee that you are being treated the right way.

If, for example, a person meets with an accident and breaks his leg, the attending doctor might advice him not to put pressure on the broken limb. It seems logical to the patient to avoid using the broken leg for even a fraction of second while walking. But, what if no recovery is experienced after a month or two passes? The person may be subjected to another treatment or may even have to undergo a leg surgery.

Here comes the importance of a second opinion. Before you give the go-ahead for any high level treatment, especially a surgical procedure, consulting another doctor should help you make the right decision. If you are not comfortable taking too many drugs during the course of your treatment, a second opinion from a naturopath would be handy.

There are people who even go for a third or fourth opinion before choosing the best treatment option. This helps them stay on the right path of getting back to the normal physical state. Even if you are told take some medications for the rest of your life, don’t get disappointed and seek consultation from other medical experts. There may be a possibility of treating the health problem in a far better manner.

    Beautiful outcome for beautiful story.

I totally agree. A second opinion is always good for serious health problems.

Great story. I recently had shoulder surgery, bicep tendon was ready to completely tear. One thing I noticed with shoulder, knee, leg, or even wrist surgeries or injuries is that “good” doctors get their patients into a physical therapy rehab program ASAP.

A week and a half after my surgery I was doing gentle motion exercises because of my arm being completely immobile in a sling. For the first week I was only to move it in the PT sessions. The next week they gave me home exercises to do on the days I was not in PT. I diligently did these and made great gains in my recovery.

Any doctor, in my opinion, who would have you just leave it with no form of rehab/recovery to get it into motion and functional again needs to go back to medical school.

    Hi Christian,
Andrew again. Thanks for the last few articles especially on second opinions.
I have worked with clients for over 35 years now and some of the things I have heard told to clients is sometimes like science fiction.
Yet many people have developed the opinion that a doctor is always right because “he is supposed to know the truth”. Then why do other doctors have differing opinions?
We are ALL human and we need to take responsibility for ourselves on the basis of proving what is true.
I like that your work reminds us to think a bit further than the superficial assumptions. Keep up the good work.

  8. thanks for your advice , Ias a causious person especially on medications always go for second opinion, especially for prescription drugs and knowing what is in it and what are the secondary effects , where as you take natural products , you already know what’s in it and what are the effects, there are none .

Sure, you need electrical flow to build those bones. How about when your doctor insists you don’t need any tests because it’s just “bloating” but it’s really advanced ovarian cancer! You have to do what you have to do to protect yourself.

    Dear Christian:

I enjoyed reading this story, as I am also a believer that doctors do not know all the answers. I am also in training with a team of people who are believers in God’s Word that healing comes from God, and we can lay hands on the sick and pray the prayer of faith, and take authority over illnesses and diseases, and they will be healed. We are seeing some wonderful things happen when we pray for those in great need. We are giving God all the glory.

I am trying to change my e-mail address on your website, but see no way to do that. Please change it from NBGranny@aol.com to: nbgranny@bellsouth.net –then you can continue to send me your information. Thanks so much!

Hello, I can completely agree that a second opinion is needed (at least sometimes). My family learnt this 2 years ago, when my Grandfather who has had prostate cancer for over 10 years, was told in Nov 04 that he had no more than 8 weeks left. We as a family were mortified of course, and rallied around from all parts of the UK, to help. 6 weeks later the hospital told us they had made a mistake (!!!????). My poor grandfather went to hell and back for nothing. Which brings me to another point. KNOWING about how long you have left to live does no one any good. I dont think anyone has the right to tell you their opinion of this, as it is extremely harrowing for everyone involved.
I have MS, and was obsessed with finding out all the information possible about my condition. I was very ill for 2 years. Then i stopped obsessing so much, and started taking care of my body and mind, by eating healthily, excerising a little, but most importantly ( I belive) i have stopped stressing about things, i have learned to breathe and to relax, and i have been relapse free for 5 years now. Healthy body, healthy mind, its true, you cant have one without the other. I obsess now, on me, and my beautiful family, and what else we can do with our lives, and how to make it happen. I hope I can give hope anyone reading this, who may have lost it along the way. Dont listen to everything doctos tell you, they are somewhat blinded by science and lining the pockets of billion dollar drugs companys! Need I say more?

  13. Alf Newby says:

Hi Christian. Nice anecdote and a wake up call for all those patients who accept first diagnoses as gospel. There are too many horrendous tales of Doctors making mistakes simply because they are not infallible. Personally I do not subscribe to the cynisism that suggests that many
unscrupulous practitioners deliberately prolong some agonies, for financial reward, but there has been irrefutable evidence that this has happened in isolated instances. The maxim is to seek alternative advice wherever doubt or misgiving exists.
