I’m so excited I can’t sleep!

Monday, June 28th, 2010

One of my readers recently wrote in asking for information about the causes of high levels of anxiety and how it affects mind racing.   This leads to insomnia.

Obviously, if your mind is racing and you are experiencing anxiety, it’s difficult to slow your mind enough to relax and go to sleep.  Many people suffer from this daily, but they don’t have to.

Let’s be honest.  In today’s society of instant gratification, get it done now and it can’t wait until tomorrow, it’s no wonder people have trouble sleeping.

When you think of insomnia, you think that it’s just not being able to fall asleep.  In actuality, it’s much more than that.  Your everyday activities are in direct relation to the quality of sleep you get each night.

It’s Hot, Hot, Hot!

I had a number of positive responses from readers regarding my previous article about the benefits of adding cayenne pepper to your diet.  So I thought I’d follow up with some details about people in various parts of the world that implement cayenne pepper into their daily diet.

In that article we covered the many benefits of cayenne pepper that include relieving your pain, stimulating your blood circulation, aiding in your digestive system, boosting your metabolism and thermogenesis rate, decreasing arthritic pain and lowering the risk of atherosclerosis and high blood pressure.  Since heart disease is known to be the number one killer in America, these benefits are compelling.

Cayenne Pepper has been used for thousands of years.  The regions of South and Central America as well as Africa were known to have put it to use first.  As its advantage spread around the world, it became known to treat a wide spectrum of diseases.

Costa Rica and the Bahamas use it to treat indigestion and colic.  Africans use it for vascular disorders and North Americans use it as a natural stimulant and tonic.  Native Americans originally and exclusively used it as an Aztec royalty treat.

Alzheimer’s Early Warning Signs

Monday, June 21st, 2010

I have a good friend whose mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s only a few years ago.   What makes me saddest is that if it were detected earlier in her life, she may be currently leading a better quality of life.

She was diagnosed shortly before turning the age of 60.  Normally, you wouldn’t think of someone that young having Alzheimer’s.  Alzheimer’s can start to affect a person 15 years before anyone notices.

It is very important to know the early warning signs so that detection or diagnosis comes much earlier.  But don’t confuse the early warning signs with your typical age related changes.

Spice up your life and lower your Blood Pressure

Friday, June 18th, 2010

I just received an email from a reader asking me to highlight the benefits of cayenne pepper in regards to high blood pressure.  Immediately, I embraced the idea as I found it would be interesting to share with all my readers.

High blood pressure or hypertension affects millions of Americans each year.  It can lead to serious conditions such as kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, or even paralysis.  It is imperative to diagnose and treat immediately.

There are many medications on the market today that your physician can prescribe.  However, are you willing to take on the side effects of such medications?  Fatigue, insomnia and nausea are a few of the side effects.  Sure, the medication may be helping your blood pressure issue, but do you want to feel like you are a walking, talking zombie?

Don’t Replace Your Water Requirement With Sugar!

Monday, June 14th, 2010

One of my staff members was sharing a story about her daughter recently, and she was beaming about how well she did on the science fair project for her 5th grade fair.  She said it was “gross” but really convincing.

She went on to say that she has veered away from her love of sports, drinks and soda and switched over to water almost exclusively (with the exception of milk with dinner).   I asked what could be so convincing and she said her daughter dissolved some baby teeth in soda.

It wasn’t a complete dissolution but they were markedly smaller after soaking for a week in sugared sodas.  The average loss in the size of the teeth was 14% she said. She went on to say that when she and her daughter were looking up procedures for the experiment so that her daughter could be sure to follow the “scientific method” correctly, they found that soda wasn’t even the worst culprit. Increase Gratitude, Decrease Pain and Suffering

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Today I was visiting with a teacher who was sharing how his year had gone and how happy he was that it is now summer.  It was bittersweet because while he is ready for his summer plans, he misses the kids and the routine- and he experiences this “happy melancholy” every year.

When I asked him if he ever had years that he didn’t miss anyone and was glad to close the book on a school year he said emphatically, “No!”  As a parent of a ‘tween’ and having observed how some kids can be I thought this was curious. (more…)

How does your Garden Grow?

Monday, June 7th, 2010

There are not very many people who would dispute the numerous benefits of growing your own organic fruits and vegetables, especially today with the increase in the price of everything, including food.  Having a vegetable garden is not always that easy, though.

Many people in closed-in areas have limited space availability, limited water, or both.  Some people work so many hours trying to stay caught up that gardening just isn’t practical. However, there are some things that you can do easily with limited resources to have fresh veggies and herbs, grown by you, that have great health benefits. (more…)

Finish Your Projects

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Are you twisting and turning for hours, waking up at 2am and not being able to fall asleep again? Or how about cursing the alarm clock because you’re still emotionally wasted, feeling drowsy and tired all day? Being an underachiever because you’re too tired to focus, missing out on life because you’re still half asleep, dreading the side effects of sleeping pills that don’t work anyway, or any other things your insomnia is burdening you with?

That sounds pretty harsh, but maybe familiar to a lot of you.  Studies show that people who chronically have a large unfinished to do list like organizing closets, paying bills, etc. are at risk for cumulative negative impact on health.  This sort of stress is on par with those who go through divorce.

Insomnia has been linked to an increase in high blood pressure as well as other stress-induced chronic conditions.  There are many factors that cause high blood pressure from people who suffer from insomnia. (more…)
