High Blood Pressure Puts You at Risk for Kidney Disease

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Just in case you needed one, here’s one more reason to get your blood pressure under control. If you have high blood pressure, or are at risk for developing it, you may not realize it, but that automatically increases your risk for kidney disease as well.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, as it’s called in the medical community, causes blood vessel damage in the kidneys. It also harms the filters contained in the kidneys, and your body is unable to properly filter out and remove the waste from your body.

Like high blood pressure, you may be unaware of any damage done to your kidneys until very late in the disease. If intervention is not made in a timely manner, you could conceivably progress to end-stage renal disease.

Check to see if you have any of the following symptoms of kidney disease.

High blood pressure

Swelling due to fluid, especially lower legs

Increased frequency of urination at night

Decreased urine output

Difficult urination

If you recognize some of the symptoms, and particularly if you have high blood pressure, it’s a good idea to see your doctor. Lab tests can determine whether or not your kidneys are functioning the way they should.

Higher than normal levels of serum creatinine or elevated BUN (blood urea nitrogen) levels may mean damage has been done to your kidneys. Your doctor can also check your urine for the presence of protein, called proteinuria, which can also indicate kidney disease.

The threat of kidney disease and the possibility of ESRF (end stage renal failure), should be enough incentive for you to monitor your blood pressure on a regular basis and try to make sure it stays below 130/80.

If you’re overweight, get serious about taking off the excess pounds so you don’t wind up with Type 2 diabetes, since that also puts you at a higher risk for developing kidney disease. Losing weight can also help, in some cases, to lower your blood pressure.

Other health issues can be affected by high blood pressure that’s left untreated including heart disease, stroke, and coronary artery disease, which can lead to a heart attack. You can also suffer damage to your brain and your eyes.

The problem with high blood pressure is that you may not realize you have it until significant damage has already been done, because there are typically no symptoms associated with it in the early stages. By the time you’re experiencing headaches, nausea, vomiting, or vision problems, your blood pressure is dangerously high.

That’s why I can’t stress strongly enough the importance of knowing what your blood pressure is and checking it regularly. I also want to stress the importance of taking action toward bringing your blood pressure within normal limits.

I’ve developed a high blood pressure program that has seen extraordinary results in thousands of individuals across the globe. In less than seven days, you can lower your blood pressure significantly by using the three simple exercises outlined in the program. It works for anyone, regardless of your age, activity level, or physical shape.

For a Bounty of Natural Benefits – Try Yoga!

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Yoga is enjoying a huge popularity across America and thousands of adults are discovering the multitude of benefits yoga provides for your spirit, your body, your mind. Why has yoga withstood the test of time for over 5000 years? Because it works.

Yoga, when practiced routinely under the watchful eye of a qualified yoga instructor, will provide you with tangible results you can begin seeing within a few short weeks. Results that some claim have completely stopped or slowed the progress of arthritis, asthma, back pain and bronchitis, depression, eyestrain, headaches, indigestion and insomnia.

But it doesn’t stop there. By improving circulation through the body, the heart is strengthened and oxygenation is enhanced. Medical professionals use yoga therapy to manage certain diseases of the nerves, as well as the heart and other muscles.

Over time, yoga can actually rejuvenate the body by improving your flexibility which, according to yoga principles, is a more reliable indicator of your age than the number of birthdays you’ve had.

You’ll discover even your posture is improved through yoga, because it helps strengthen back, neck and shoulder muscles. It causes you to pay more attention to your body and the way it’s aligned, which makes you aware of your posture, improving it even more. The result is you’ll carry yourself with more confidence and will portray a more attractive demeanor.

Yoga shapes and tones your muscles. Many of the postures, or asanas, use your own weight as resistance; others enhance flexibility in your joints and increase your range of motion. The combined effect of these asanas is a well-toned body with increased stamina and lengthened endurance.

Yoga also fights obesity and can help you lose weight. During the poses, different organs and glands are stimulated which helps regulate their functions. You’ll find your digestion is better, your metabolism increased and you’ll enjoy a natural suppression of your appetite.

Believe it or not, yoga can actually be a great substitution for an aerobic workout! The reason for this is because during a yoga session, your heart rate and breathing both increase throughout the exercise, which typically lasts for at least an hour, sometimes even longer. The side effect of this is increased oxygen intake and improved lung capacity.

But all of this really only touches the tip of the iceberg. Most of what I’ve listed here is focused on only the physical benefits of practicing yoga on a regular basis. Yoga’s benefits go much, much further.

Through meditation, yoga brings calmness to your mind and spirit while improving mental clarity and focus. You’ll find yourself able to concentrate better and sleep better. It’s easier to maintain more pleasant thoughts and keep yourself in a positive mood.

And it doesn’t stop there! Your self-confidence is ramped up; you become much more self-aware you’ll feel more vitality than ever before. Yoga has even been credited with improving sex lives

This is only an overview of just a few of the ways yoga benefits you. It’s nowhere close to a complete list. Yoga is a pathway to harmony between your mind, your body, and your spirit.

The word yoga actually means ‘union’ which is what it helps you achieve; union in all areas of your life. The best way to discover all the benefits yoga has to offer is to simply try it and see for yourself.

Many of the exercises in my various programs, I’ve borrowed from Yoga.

I don’t use them directly. But I’ve taken many and changed them to be more effective for the task I want to tackle.

One of this program is my Fibromyalgia program which has now helped thousands of people to take their life back and regain their energy.

Are Your Children at Risk for Obesity?

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

There are countless articles written about weight loss and hundreds of weight loss programs available. Yet few address the fact that our children are also overweight. This is even more alarming when you consider the number of overweight children and teenagers has tripled in the last twenty years and those numbers continue to grow.

The percentage of overweight children from 6-11 years of age has risen from 4% in 1974 to 17.5% in 2004. The numbers are no better for teenagers. Overweight children between the ages of 12 and 19 have increased from 6% in 1974 to 17% in 2004. Today, 32% of children are overweight. 16% are obese. And 11% are considered extremely obese.

Children are under even more peer pressure about their weight than most adults can imagine. Adolescent girls, as young as 13 years old, are begging for, and some are actually having, gastric surgeries to reduce their weight quickly. Some see bulimia or anorexia as their only solution.

The biggest threat with childhood and teenage obesity is these children are much more likely to become obese adults. The difference is they’re being affected at a much younger age with the same health issues that plague obese adults. It’s predicted this generation of children will be the first in history to have a shorter life span than their parents.

It’s pointless to discuss here the reasons we’ve let our children get fat. We all know the reasons, and as adults, we’re the ones primarily to blame, not the kids. Our children are fat because we feed them junk instead of healthy, nutritious foods.

Too much sugar laden cereal and not enough oatmeal for breakfast. Too many overly processed, nutritionally bankrupt, calorie-laden snacks and not enough fruit and vegetables. And so much fast food, too much and too often.

On top of that, we’ve ceased to insist, or even encourage our kids to be active. It’s too easy to let them spend one mind-numbing hour after another in front of a TV screen or a computer monitor. They’re growing up so sedentary that even playing outside seems like work. What have we done to our children?

If you have a child struggling with weight issues, it’s time to step up and take responsibility for it. The damage is not only being done to their physical body, inside and out, but it’s wreaking havoc on them emotionally.

Children shouldn’t have to suffer with issues like depression and a lack of self-esteem. They shouldn’t have to endure the daily teasing and rude comments from thoughtless classmates that chip away at their self-image.

It isn’t fair to take a young body that’s still struggling to grow and put the added demands of carrying around extra weight on it. I’m encouraging all parents and grandparents who have overweight children in their life to do something about it.

Get active with your child. Find the time, make the time to prepare healthier meals and offer healthier, wholesome snacks. And try my program Weight Loss Breeze to bring your child’s weight back to a normal, healthy level. It’s a natural, sensible approach to weight loss. And best of all, it works.

A Tribute to Honey

Monday, August 18th, 2008

The Oxford Pocket Dictionary of Current English gives the following definition of a word that is generally not used in day-to-day conversation but which is a word that should be thought of by everyone on a daily basis.

hu•mec•tant / (h)yoōˈmektənt/ • adj. retaining or preserving moisture. • n. a substance, esp. a skin lotion or a food additive, used to reduce the loss of moisture.

While almost everyone would begin to think of aloe as one of the most common natural humectants, one that is more readily available in its natural state to today’s consumer is pure ol’ honey. That’s right! Honey is perhaps one of the best-kept secrets around, especially when it comes to skin care.

From Cleopatra to Christie Brinkley, legendary beauties throughout the centuries have understood the importance of moisturizers in keeping skin healthy and youthful. While looking great is on everyone’s agenda, our skin is the largest organ we have and one of its primary functions is to protect our bodies. Taking care of the skin can have a much greater benefit than that of simply satisfying one’s vanity, and how fortunate we are to have honey to help us do both!

A major cause of aging skin is exposure to free radicals. Honey is a significant and powerful antioxidant and has been found to counter the free radicals in your skin. As an antioxidant, honey can also be vitally important in protecting the skin from damage by the UV rays of the sun while serving to promote skin rejuvenation as well. The natural, soothing properties of honey make it ideal for anti-irritants, moisturizers, sunscreens, and cosmetics.

In its natural state, honey contains copper, iron, silica, vitamin B, B1, B2, C, B6, B5, B3, manganese, chlorine, calcium, potassium, sodium, phosphorous, aluminum, magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium chlorine, sulphur, iron, phosphate, propolis, wax, and pollen. It’s of critical importance to always use raw unfiltered honey whenever possible. This is honey that has not been heated or treated and the bees’ enzymes and healing properties are untouched. We’re talking about honey ’straight from the hive’. It’s unfortunate that much of the available honey on the market today has been filtered, heated, and processed to enhance its appearance to the consumer. In making it look nicer, the nutrients have often been lost, destroyed, or removed.

Because honey has an anti-bacterial nature, it can cleanse the skin’s surface as well as temporarily tighten the outer skin layers while acting as both a cleanser and a toner. It’s frightening that many of today’s skin care products are little more than chemical cocktails designed to be smeared onto the face, hair and skin. Few people seem to realize that these chemicals are being absorbed into their bodies in many cases. But honey is readily available, inexpensive, healthy, and best of all… natural!

While many home based skin care recipes which use honey are available, five of the most basic ones are simple and easy:

•         For a honey facial moisturizer combine 2 Tablespoons of honey with 2 Teaspoons of milk. Apply to face, leave on for 10 minutes, and then rinse with warm water.

•         You can whip up a fast honey body scrub by mixing ½ cup of raw honey with ½ cup of sugar or salt. Step into the shower and scrub the mixture onto your skin before rinsing thoroughly for an exfoliate with a moisturizing twist.

•         A rejuvenating facial scrub can easily be made by combining 1 Tablespoon of honey with 2 Tablespoons of finely ground almonds and 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice. Gently rubbing into the skin and rinsing with warm water will leave your face feeling clean, moist, and refreshed.

•         This honey mask has to be the easiest yet. Simply spread a thin layer over your face and leave for about fifteen minutes before rinsing with warm water. You will be amazed at how clean and soft your skin will feel.

•         Mixing honey and cinnamon in equal parts will create a paste that can cure eczema, ringworm and many types of skin infections.

Regardless of the application you choose, it’s a sure bet that adding some honey to your life will make a believer out of you. You’ll see the remarkable results that this natural product can offer immediately and prolonged use will give your skin softness and youthfulness that you hadn’t expected to ever enjoy again!

Weight Loss and Better Health through Raw Foods

Friday, August 15th, 2008

It hasn’t been that long ago that our ancestors survived and even thrived on a diet that was composed primarily of raw foods including fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouted seeds and grains, dried fruit and juices, rolled or flaked grains, along with a few herbs and spices.

When times were good, animals and fish provided meat but the average adult diet consisted primarily of fruits and vegetables. The women were lean, the men were muscular, and everyone spent hours each day walking, running, and exerting themselves physically in a variety of daily activities.

Everything rocked along rather well until somewhere, someone discovered fire, and thus we began the long downward spiral that ultimately led us to today’s ‘processed foods’.

In just three generations, our society has taken a relatively healthy diet and while attempting to make it more appealing we’ve gotten off course, way off course.

Today’s highly processed foods are certainly more attractive and thus more marketable, so it’s a sure bet that it looks really good on the shelf. In addition to making it look so appetizing, we’ve added countless chemicals pushing preservation to the very edge, where shelf life is virtually unlimited.

But the most devastating news is this, our daily diet of overly processed food has been stripped of any real nutritional value and fiber has been all but forgotten.

French fries and ketchup are the two most commonly consumed vegetables at a time when we also find ourselves plagued with arthritis, attention deficit disorder, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes and cancer.

Add high levels of stress, sedentary jobs, poor air and water quality and it’s no wonder we’re a more obese, malnourished, infertile yet angry and violent society today.

Is it possible that the solution to so many of our social issues can be found in something as simple as raw food?

Well, take a moment to consider a few things; the recommended daily servings are two to three fruits and three to five vegetables.

Too often people interpret the goal as five servings of fruit and vegetables when in reality a maximum of eight servings would be ideal.

That’s a daily intake of eight servings of nutritionally dense foods that are naturally designed to satisfy you so you will find yourself eating less.

Additionally, weight loss is almost a certainty when you shift your focus from processed foods to fresh fruits and raw vegetables.

Because calorie and carbohydrate intake are substantially reduced when concentrating on raw foods, it’s hard to overeat on such a diet. An added benefit to the high water and fiber content of such a diet will be realized in a feeling of fullness, a healthier digestive system, and a detoxified body with increased anti-aging properties.

A drastic shift toward raw food can overwhelm your body and it is highly recommended that you gradually increase your intake of raw food over several days while at the same time reducing the amount of processed foods.

You will find yourself spending less time in the kitchen preparing foods and more time enjoying them.

It’s quite possible that you might find yourself strolling through the produce department a bit more frequently however, as raw foods do not have the vast quantities of preservatives (yes, that’s the chemicals) so freshness must be controlled by buying only the items that you expect to consume in a short period of time.

You can find many recommendations online for meal plans designed to include more raw foods into your daily life, and when combined with the health improving elements of Weight Loss Breeze you can be well on your way to a healthier, slimmer and revitalized YOU!
